How we count
Every number on Machinery One comes from listings Canadian dealers publish on their own websites. This page explains which listings we include and how the price figures are worked out.
Where the listings come from
We read the public used-equipment pages of Canadian dealers with our crawler, MachineryOneBot. It obeys each site's robots.txt and waits at least 3 seconds between requests to the same site. We copy the machine's facts and asking price, never its photos, and every listing links to the dealer's own page.
A full read of every dealer runs once a week. A lighter check runs every day to see whether each machine is still listed. A machine that is no longer on the dealer's site is taken off ours. That usually means it sold, but it can also mean the dealer moved or withdrew it, so we never treat it as a sale price.
Which machines we include
- Used machines only. New stock is left out, including next year's models listed with no hours or kilometres.
- Asking prices of $10,000 CAD or more. Prices are in Canadian dollars as the dealer shows them.
- A price, or "call for price" on heavy equipment. Call-for-price listings are shown for categories such as excavators, dozers, loaders, trucks, tractors and combines, but not for trailers, attachments or mowers.
- Machines, not parts. Parts, filter kits, tires, rims and GPS equipment are left out.
How the price figures work
- Asking prices, not selling prices. Every figure is what dealers ask. Machines often sell for less, and we have no data on how much.
- The median is the middle asking price: half the priced listings ask more, half ask less. It is less thrown off by one very expensive or very cheap machine than an average would be.
- Call-for-price listings count toward the number of listings but not toward any price figure.
- The middle half is the range from the 25th to the 75th percentile of asking prices: half of the priced listings fall inside it.
- Dealers means dealers with at least one machine listed on Machinery One at the time.
Comparing weeks
We add dealers often, so a change in a median can come from which dealers we read rather than from the market. The weekly market report shows a percentage change for a machine type only when both weeks have at least 30 priced listings of that type, and when its number of listings and of dealers moved less than 15%. When the whole inventory or dealer count moved more than that, the report says so and shows no percentages.
Figures in older posts
Every figure in a blog post was true on the date the post gives. The live numbers are on the market snapshot, which updates as dealers update their stock.
Fair Market Valuations
Machine pages link to Fair Market Valuations for a free value range. It is our sister site, run by the same owner. Its ranges are built mostly from auction results, which are a different kind of price from the dealer asking prices shown here.
